Hydraulic Border Intervals is an installation and artistic research project by Valerie Karpan. It approaches borders as environmental and infrastructural conditions, where military violence, changing landscapes and the movement of people, water and sound become entangled.
Set in the circular architecture of the Tieranatomisches Theater, close to the Panke River, the work is a listening environment shaped by interference and by shifting relations between bodies, sound and space. It brings together field recordings and found materials from collaborative research on Khortytsia Island in Ukraine, with Maryna Marynichenko and Clemens Poole, and my field recordings from the Evros Delta in Greece.
For the project I contributed field recordings from the Evros Delta, worked on the sound development together with Jean-Daniel Tömör, and took part in the conceptual conversations. The installation was first activated in public on 4 July 2026 with listening sessions, an artist talk and conversations with participants.
