“Synoriaka Echωtopia” approaches the borderland of Western Thrace in Greece through listening. The title refers to synoro – border, shared edge – as well as to echo and place: a territory of echoes and of the sounds that inhabit a landscape. The lecture performance follows a weave of margins, transitional spaces, unequal participation, negotiations over the right to hear and to sound, and conditions of forced transparency and aphony.
The work turns its attention to a land shaped by military exercises, drones, border patrols, official speeches, religious rituals, cross-border tourism and the barking of dogs. It also listens to what has been violently silenced: a forest that fell silent after major wildfires, the enforced silence of people in transit, and forms of erasure and oppression. From field recordings, texts and material gathered between 2024 and 2026, the performance develops listening as a method and as an ethical question at the threshold.
Lefteris Krysalis is a sound artist and researcher working at the intersection of experimental radio, electroacoustic composition and acoustic ecology. Through field recordings, installations, radio broadcasts and lecture performances, his practice investigates the politics of listening. He is a doctoral candidate at Bauhaus-Universität Weimar.
