Vox Ex Machina

FUNKEN Akademie, Chemnitz, 2025

A cooperation between Pinpoint GmbH, Matthias Millhoff, Lefteris Krysalis & Frederike Moormann

Sound installation, second iteration of Knatternde Landschaften, Summende Motoren

FUNKEN Extend, Funken Akademie, former machine factory, Gießerstraße, Chemnitz, November 2025

Hissing robots, rattling steam engines, groaning looms, buzzing voices. When does a machine become a voice, and when does a voice become a machine? In Vox Ex Machina, machine sounds and vocal sounds intermingle. They harmonise and collide with one another, forming a choir – and a sound-archaeological landscape. Visitors are invited to compose through their movement in space inside the former machine factory.

The project is a collaboration between sound artists Matthias Millhoff, Lefteris Krysalis & Frederike Moormann and PinPoint GmbH, which developed an indoor positioning system. Together they explore possibilities and idiosyncrasies of spatial sound.

Vox Ex Machina is a project within the cross-sectoral program of the Funken Academy and is based on a prototype developed at the Funken Kolleg for the European Capital of Culture Chemnitz 2025.
